Equilibrium Expands into Tailings and Mine Waste Services

Introducing our newest practice

Building on our multidisciplinary approach to solving complex mining challenges, Equilibrium is proud to announce the launch of our Mine Waste practice, expanding our capabilities to support clients across the full mining project lifecycle.

Since our founding, Equilibrium has delivered specialized geotechnical, hydrogeological, and structural geology solutions to mining projects around the world. Our clients increasingly face complex challenges that require integrated thinking across mine design, water management, operational performance, environmental stewardship, and long-term closure planning.

"The addition of Mine Waste capabilities represents a natural evolution of our services and an important step forward in our mission to provide practical, technically robust solutions to the global mining industry."

A More Integrated Approach to Mining Challenges

Mine waste facilities are among the most significant and technically demanding components of modern mining operations. These systems require multidisciplinary expertise and a comprehensive understanding of site-specific conditions.

This expansion of our services into mine waste will provide clients with specialized support in:

  • Tailings storage facility design and management
  • Waste rock spoil/dump design
  • Co-disposal (tailings and waste rock) design and permitting
  • Facility performance monitoring and operational support
  • Risk assessment and governance
  • Regulatory and permitting support

This expanded offering strengthens our ability to deliver integrated solutions that combine geotechnical engineering and hydrogeology within a single collaborative team.

Welcoming Our New Team Leader

Building this strategic practice, we are thrilled to welcome Julia Steele to the Equilibrium team as our Global Director of Mine Waste.

Julia is a Professional Engineer and leader with more than 25 years of experience in mining, geotechnical engineering, and leadership roles in environmental consulting across Canada.

Her technical foundation is in geotechnical engineering and mine waste management. Over her career, she has contributed to major mining and infrastructure projects throughout Western and Northern Canada, including tailings storage facilities, co-disposal facilities, waste rock management, geohazard mitigation, and other geotechnical projects.

Julia is passionate about developing practical, risk-informed solutions that support responsible resource development while protecting communities and the environment. She is equally passionate about building strong technical teams. She has led organizational growth, integrated multidisciplinary practices, developed future leaders, grown relationships with Indigenous partners, and strengthened collaboration across business sectors.
